This week we will begin to discuss some of the more ‘current’ technology, that has its beginnings in the early part of the 20th century… loudspeakers & microphones.  You should get started reading in the Alten text Chapter 3 (Loudspeakers & Monitoring), and Chapter 4 (Microphones).

Remember to complete your first Observation, and turn in your written report in class on Tuesday Feb. 9.  No emails please! Review the Observation Report Guide on the ‘Assignments’ page before writing your report.

Let me know if you have any questions, and see you on Tuesday!

I have posted all of the presentations on the ‘Presentations’ page, and you will find a related ‘worksheet’ to guide you to the important topics from our discussion today.

You should review all of your notes & worksheets, and the presentations in order to prepare for the exam.  All questions will be of the multiple-choice variety.  You will need a #2 pencil to mark your answers on the scantron card.

Also, you may turn in the ‘Extra Credit Listening’ report on Thursday if you were unable to on Tuesday.

Let me know if you have any questions, and good luck!

Continue to work on your ‘Early Recording Technology’ worksheet for Tuesday, and make plans for your first Observation too.  Remember, you need to ‘observe’ at least one each tracking, overdubbing, and mixing session at the Belmont Studios, and should also include one observation @ RCA B.

Details about the Extra Credit listening assignment that I referred to in class are posted on the ‘Assignments’ page.

On Tuesday, we will continue to look at some Early Recording Technology, and discuss the transition from ‘Acoustic Recording’ to ‘Electric Recording’.  Related readings in the 1380 Handbook include pp. 41 – 48, 57 – 64.

As Test 1 will be on Thursday Feb. 4, we will do a bit of review on Tuesday to get ready :)

Have a great weekend, and enjoy the ’snow’!

Week 3: Continued…

I hope that you enjoyed the brief look at the the Massey Recording Studios on Tuesday… we will spend a bit of time there on Thursday to review our Acoustics discussion.

We will continue with the ‘Psychoacoustics’ presentation, and move next into ‘Early Recording Technology’ to better understand some of the obstacles that had to be overcome at the beginning of the Recording Industry.  You should be reading Alten Chapter 2 (8th Edition) or Chapter 3 (7th Edition), and in the 1380 Workbook pp. 41 – 48 & 57 – 60.

Make sure to prepare right away for your first Session Observation… sign up for either a tracking, overdubbing, or mixing session time.  You can check for available sessions on-line, however you must sign up in the Observations Sign Up Book at the studio lobby desk!  The first Observation Report is due on Tuesday Feb. 9.

See you on Thursday,

- JK

On Tuesday we will begin a discussion of ‘Acoustics & Psychoacoustics’.  You should be reading in the Alten text (Chapter 2  pp. 19 – 38), and also check out the web link that I have posted (‘Sound & Acoustics Online’) to become familiar.

We will have a brief quiz over ‘Sound & Hearing’ & ‘Sound & The Ear’ at the beginning of class!

I will also introduce your upcoming ‘Observation’ assignments... check out the ‘Assignments’ page to get a head start on this.

See you in class!

- JK

You should review ‘Sound & Hearing’ and complete that part of your worksheet before class. We will continue with ‘Sound & The Ear’ on Thursday.

Please read Chapter 1 (pp. 1 – 18) in the Alten text, along w/ ‘The Phonograph, The Telegraph, And Possibilities’ pp. 49 – 56 in the 1380 Handbook to prepare for Thursday’s discussion.

There will be a brief quiz in class over these topics too :)

See you Thursday!

- Jim Kaiser

Week 2: Sound & The Ear

We will be discussing Sound & The Ear this week…

I am hoping that you will be able to get both texts (see ‘Texts & Materials’) as soon as they are available @ the campus bookstore.  In the meanwhile, you should check out the links that relate to this material… under ‘Technology’, explore Hyperphysics (Sound)’ and ‘Sound and Acoustics Online’.

See you on Tuesday!

Week 1: Intro & Overview

I hope that you are off to a great start this semester, and that you are looking forward to learning more about recording technology and how it has affected the music industry.

Check back often for updates to this site…you will find the syllabus & schedule separately on the ‘Schedule’ page.

Make sure to pick up copies of both texts (see ‘Texts & Materials’ page) before our next meeting.
