I hope that you are enjoying your weekend!

Remember that your first Observation Reports are due before class time on Thursday Feb. 2.

Be sure to follow the formatting detailed in the handout that you received in class.  This is also available here on the ‘Assignments’ page (look for ‘Observation Guidelines’).

You are required to create your report in Word .doc format (minimum 3 pages, double-spaced, plus pictures), and submit it via Blackboard (no email or printed submissions accepted!).  Please use the file naming structure as shown in the Blackboard instructions.

During the Tuesday class this week, you will spend time learning the procedures for the ‘Recording Project’. Please read carefully the details about this project on the ‘Projects’ page, under ‘Recording Project’.  A reminder that I will be calling on ‘volunteer’ performers, engineers, and producers to help make this demonstration more fun :)

See you in class!

You should review your worksheets, readings, and the presentations in order to prepare for this exam.  Look for the powerpoints and readings on the ‘Presentations’ page (under ‘Test 1′).

Questions will be of the multiple-choice variety.  You will need a #2 pencil to mark your answers on the scantron card.

Good luck, and see you in class!

During our next class time, we will discuss the transition from ‘Acoustic Recording’ to ‘Electric Recording’.  Related readings in the 1380 Workbook include “Birth of Recording” and “The Phonograph v the Gramophone”, and we will listen to some examples.

Remember to sign-up for your first Observation right away!  You should select a ‘Tracking Session’ in one of the Belmont studios that occurs by Wed. Feb. 1 to allow time to write your report.

We will also do a bit of reviewing for Test 1.  Be sure to bring your completed worksheets (and your questions) with you to class for this :)

Details about the Extra Credit listening assignment are posted on the ‘Assignments’ page.

You should plan to turn in your minimum 1-page report (Word .doc format ONLY) via Blackboard by class time on Tuesday.

Have a great weekend!

This week we will be learning about ‘Acoustics & Psychoacoustics’, and ‘Intro to Early Recording’.  You should read in the Alten text (Chapter 2  pp. 19 – 38), check out the web link ‘Sound & Acoustics Online’, and read in the workbook “The Birth of Recording” and “Phonograph v Gramophone”  to get ready.

We will also introduce your upcoming ‘Observation’ assignments... check out the ‘Belmont Studios’ page to get a head start on this.  Click here & create a user id/password  so that you may log-in and sign-up to attend sessions at the various Belmont recording studios.

See you in class!

Hello -

I have posted the online Quiz for you today. You will find it on the class Blackboard site under the ‘Assessments’ tab.

This is a timed quiz, and you must complete it within 30 minutes of when you start.  You have until Monday @ 8 PM to take this quiz.

There are 15 fill-in-the-blank and multiple-choice type questions covering the material that we have discussed so far. You may use your worksheet while taking the quiz, so please fill this in prior to taking the quiz.

You should also be reading Alten Ch. 2 ‘Acoustics & Psychoacoustics’ to get ready for our class discussion on Tuesday.

Have a great weekend!

- Jim Kaiser

Remember to review the ‘Sound – The Basics’ presentation on-line, and fill-in that part of your worksheet. We will complete this section, and continue with ‘Sound & The Ear’ on Thursday. (Note: You will find all of these ppts under ‘Presentations’ above, and then ‘Test 1′.)

Please read  ’The Phonograph, The Telegraph, And Possibilities’  in the 1380 Handbook to prepare for Thursday’s discussion.

If you have not already done so, please take a few moments to complete the Survey so that I can include you in the results.

See you in class!

- Jim Kaiser

It was great to meet you on Thursday & to get the semester started.

Before next Tuesday’s class…

  • Read Alten Chapter 1 on “Sound & Hearing”, and be sure to pick up a copy of the AET1380 Survey of Recording Technology Workbook.  The workbook contains material that will be used throughout the semester.
  • Check out the links (left column, below) that relate to this material too… under ‘Technology’, explore Hyperphysics (Sound)’ and ‘Sound and Acoustics Online’.
  • And… check your Belmont email account!  I have sent a ‘link’ to the Music & Technology Survey to be completed right away.

Have a great weekend!

- Jim Kaiser
